SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Education -- CSU enrollment is up 2.7 percent: "Latino center gets grant for asthma

SAN MARCOS – The National Latino Research Center has received a $420,000 grant to fight asthma.

The center at California State University San Marcos will provide technical assistance, training, policy development and other help to groups fighting asthma triggers. The three-year grant is from the California Endowment.

One in 10 California children suffers from asthma, affecting nearly 1.2 million youths in the state and costing $480 million a year in hospital stays, according to the center. Since 2002, the Community Action to Fight Asthma network, funded by the California Endowment, has helped shape public policies that affect the environmental conditions that could trigger asthma in children.

The research center works with Southern California hospitals, clinics, schools, housing rights groups, community advocates and parents of children with asthma to try to reduce possible asthma triggers, including poor indoor and outdoor air quality at schools, emissions from diesel exhaust on streets and conditions including mold, roaches, and chipped and peeling paint in the home.

For more information call the center at (760) 750-3503.
